Monsignor’s Book Prompted by the Holy Spirit by Anne F. Downey Are you looking for a book that will inspire you or someone you know? A book filled with wisdom and insight, and faithful to the teachings of the Church? A book that will change lives by God’s grace? The Holy Spirit has inspired one of our Western New York priests to write just such a book. The book, entitled Spiritual Reflections in Honor of God the Father, was authored by Msgr. Richard T. Nugent, pastor of St. Bernadette Church in Orchard Park. The idea for the book was prompted by the Holy Spirit in September 2002 when one of Father Nugent’s parishioners attended a Catholic Writers Conference at Franciscan University of Steubenville. During the year that followed, Father Nugent and friends spent many hours turning Father’s weekly “Pastor’s Corner” columns into a book. The columns cover a wide variety of topics that can help us live out our Catholic faith, including the sacraments, holy days, saints, marriage, vocations, children, life, death, and everything in between. Father writes from his perspective as a pastor who has served in the priesthood for over 50 years. His columns always “tell it like it is,” yet he writes with compassion and love. Spiritual Reflections is arranged into chapters in the order of the Apostles’ Creed, starting with columns under the heading “I believe in God.” Each chapter is illustrated with original artwork by Annette T. Darling, a talented Catholic artist from Western New York. In preparing the nearly 20 illustrations, Annette sought the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and her drawings offer insight into the truths of our Catholic faith. For example, the illustration of “Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord” shows a vine of thorns leading from the Infant Jesus, to the Child Jesus, to the 12-year old Jesus, and then to our crucified Lord.
All proceeds from the sale of the book will be given to charity, including St. Bernadette School and Father Evarist at a sister parish in Uganda. Were you inspired by Father Nugent’s 2003 book Spiritual Reflections in Honor of God the Father? In November 2009 we released Spiritual Reflections II containing more of Father Nugent’s beloved church bulletin columns and the inspired artwork of St. Bernadette School’s art teacher, Annette Darling.
The first book was arranged into chapters in the order of the Apostles’ Creed, starting with columns under the heading “I believe in God.” The second book is arranged into chapters in the order of the Lord’s Prayer, starting with “Our Father who art in heaven.” Once again, net proceeds will benefit St. Bernadette School. |
