Text Box: Text Box: Children’s Liturgy of the Word
Each weekend at the 9:00 and 11:00 AM Sunday Masses
Children 5 to 10 years of age are invited to attend an age-appropriate presentation of the readings
during the Mass’s regular Liturgy of the Word.
They then return to their families for the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Text Box: TESTIMONIES FROM CATECHISTS

On a September Sunday morning in 2003, our Director of Religious Education made an appeal for catechists; several classes could not begin without more volunteers. I am not a teacher, my children were not part of the R.E. program, and I certainly was not searching for more things to add to my “To Do” list. Still, something “tugged” at me to embrace that ministry, and I am now looking forward to meeting my eighth year of second graders!

The support, encouragement, and resources from the R.E. staff are extraordinary and provide catechists with everything necessary to prepare and present each lesson. My second graders are excited to learn about Jesus; their enthusiasm is contagious. And I have received an unexpected blessing; my own faith has grown, thanks to the thoughtful ideas, responses, and questions from the children. I am glad that I let that “tug” pull me into the ministry of catechesis.
					…Laurie Kuminecz, Grade 2 Catechist

“The best way to serve the Lord is to enrich children’s lives by teaching His Word. Teaching religion for two years has taught me so much about my faith. I feel very blessed to have taught in St. Bernadette’s 1st grade religion class. Teaching religion requires a person to have a love of God, a willingness to read His Word, and a loving heart. The loving heart is needed to accept that the children will teach you far more than you will teach them. Please consider teaching or perhaps assisting a teacher. The experience is incredibly rewarding and priceless.”
… Jen W., Junior at Orchard Park High School

“The privilege that I have of working with children, forming their faith, is a satisfying feeling as a Catholic. Bringing them closer to an understanding, not only about God, but also about the Church itself, impacts their lives. This is a transformation that I see as the children progress through weekly lessons. The experience as a Catechist has also enriched my life through spreading the Word.”
					…Karen Skalski

“Please consider becoming a Catechist! For me, this has been one of the most fulfilling ways to share my faith and “witness” to children for whom this may be the only faith sharing that they experience. I learned very early on that I probably would not touch all the heart I tried to touch, but that if even one child moved closer to God the Father, Son, and His Mother, through my teaching of the faith, then I would have answered His call on my own journey to becoming a good servant. The times I have experienced children asking questions, being excited about their faith and showing love to not only God, but each other, has filled my own heart. Not everyone is at a time in their lives to teach, but for those of you who have even entertained the thought, I encourage you to spend time teaching our children about our beautiful faith; after all, these children in our parish are our future and without spiritual guidance and direction, they will never know the gift we have all been given to be Catholic.” …Joanne Liwicki

“I am not sure what led me to be a Catechist. I just felt that I wanted to help and it felt like a natural fit. I have loved the two that I have been doing it and I absolutely adore the children! I can‟t wait to meet the next batch in September. It makes me proud to see all the little ones march down the aisle for the Eucharist for the first time and then, in the weeks after, walking with their parents. It’s quite a sense of accomplishment for me knowing that I helped them to be one step closer to Christ.”
